Where Does the “Fishy Odor” Come From?
Most women throughout their lives will notice that their vaginal discharge will excrete some form of vaginal odor. For the most part, this odor is extremely mild and harmless; any sexual partner you have will likely not even notice it, let alone care.
However, about 29% of women in America will find that at times, they have a truly foul odor, usually characterized as fishy, though it may be overwhelmingly yeasty as well. This odor is usually symptomatic of Bacterial vaginosis or a yeast infection.
Bacterial vaginosis usually comes about as a result of a disturbance in the natural vaginal flora. These tiny microbes in the vagina work to clean you out naturally and keep the pH acid balance normal in the vagina. When the flora are disrupted or killed, the pH balance is knocked out of balance and it’s harder for your vagina to stay clean by itself.
Vaginal flora can be disrupted in a number of ways: douching will do it, using scented or perfumed soaps too much can do it and in rare cases, so can diet. Tight clothing will also disrupt your vagina if worn too much and new sexual partners can also cause some disruption.
However, a more specific cause has yet to be found, so finding a way to manage it can be difficult; compounded by the fact that many women refuse to get help for it and instead seek more discreet methods.
The fishy odor is embarrassing, but rarely cause of serious alarm (though it is a good idea to see a doctor for chronic odor and excessive discharge as these can be a symptom of more serious diseases), so if you want to use more discreet methods, you usually can. One of the better products you can use is herbal soap.
It deodorizes and cleans the vagina without disrupting the vaginal flora; indeed, it can help them recover. However, for any sufferer of bacterial vaginosis, it is a wonderful product because it is affordable, all natural and completely discreet.
The fishy odor is something many women live in dread of and it has a serious impact on the lives of many women. Sexual encounters are diminished, many women feel embarrassed and unclean and self confidence altogether takes a hit.
Talking to a doctor is sometimes too embarrassing for women, when it’s possible at all, and many women are desperate to try anything that could help, leading to the use of some dangerous or useless products.
Instead of risking your health and your sexual health with strange products, try products we reviewed instead and try talking to your doctor. No amount of embarrassment is worth putting yourself through vaginal odor again and again when there is an easy cure right at your fingertips.
